The Twisted Ones by T. Kingfisher

3.0

"The Twisted Ones" is the funniest creepy story I've ever read.
No joke here.

The protagonist, Melissa, a thirtysomething woman tasked with clearing out the house of a dead unkind grandmother, is a very self-aware person. I love how she's very open and ready when about to make a bad decision. Her voice actually sets her apart from the usual, stereotypical 'unfortunate, foolish white woman' in many horror flicks out there. I can totally sympathize with her and all her coping mechanisms, which sometimes feel absurd and out of place, like making stupid, nitpicking commentaries inside her head in dire situations.

I feel you, sis.
I get you one hundred percent.

That being said, I think some parts can be better at being hauntingly scary if only there are not so many snarks thrown around. And the part where Melissa managed to find her stepgrandfather's manuscript and read it drops the intensity of the story quite a lot, and I got bored I almost abandoned the whole thing. The only thing keeping me going is just Melissa's sense of humor and I genuinely want to know if she's going to survive.

Another thing: I love that the protagonist gets her support system here. No betrayal twist whatsoever and it's just so refreshing. Thank you Foxy and Tomas and Skip and Enid for not leaving Melissa deal with everything alone. You guys are the best.
