The House of My Mother by Shari Franke
dark

I watched the documentary Devil in the Family: The Fall of Ruby Franke before listening to this. Shari definitely gives much more details as opposed to the doc. I was never a follower of 8 Passengers (family vlogging should be illegal at this point), but I am an avid YouTube watcher. Many people I follow were concerned for years about the Franke's before the day Jodi and Ruby got caught.
Shari's retelling is truly heart breaking. All those poor children, born into a religion, dare I say cult, that they didn't choose to be in, with harsh rules they are forced to follow. I saw someone else on here say that they don't think Shari realizes yet just how much of a role her church played in this happening, which I agree with and hope one day she will come to terms with it.
The whole story she shared of the married man from church taking advantage of her broke my heart. Everyone around this family failed to prepare them for the real world and the scary things people could do.
I feel disgusted by her father. I know for her it's a complicated situation but he was there too. And he did nothing. He allowed Ruby to do whatever she liked, allowed his children's privacy to be exploited for money for years before Jodi came into the picture. He is an absolute coward and should carry just as much as the burden. I personally feel like he got away with his part in why this even happened in the first place. He never protected those kids.
I'm extremely surprised she is still in contact with him, given the fact that in the doc he admits on camera he still loves Ruby, even after he abused her kids. If they didn't get caught, those children would be dead. Which is why, I unfortunately don't think this is the end of the story. I believe the trauma Kevin and the children have, mixed with the religion they still follow, may lead them to 'forgive' or invite Ruby back in again.
Time will tell, and I hope they all find peace. Except Ruby, Jodi and Kevin.
