Big Magic: Creative Living Beyond Fear by Elizabeth Gilbert

informative inspiring reflective fast-paced

5.0

This is a wonderful quick read that helps when you need a no-nonsense but somehow helpful kick out of your own head in terms of being a creator. Not all of it resonated directly with me, but for certain issues that can cause creator's block, I find it very helpful and reassuring.

Written almost as a series of ruminations, reading this feels a bit like getting the chance to meet one of your favorite authors and asking for some advice. The ultimate message is paradoxical, finding a balance in creativity, where you care so much about being a creator, yet carefully not caring too much about your creations that you're stunted into never starting a project at all, for whatever fear-based reason comes up specifically for you.

Not everything will resonate, of course, and some of it will feel a bit like tough love, but it's true. I always struggle with the "what's the point?" and I agree that it has to come from a place of loving the act of creating more than any external circumstances or results.

I read this one whenever I feel I need that extra little boost.
