Spectacles by Sue Perkins
5.0
Much like Sue Perkins herself, this memoir is hilarious, charming and stuffed full of expletives. I like to think she'd enjoy that sentence.
Examining her life from the streets of Croydon (and the terrifying Catholic school run by Irish nuns) to her extensive work at the BBC, whether she's conducting a live orchestra or running around the famous Bake Off tent trying to steal leftover food from the contestants, she does so with a huge amount of grace and the humour that we as a country need in these turbulent times.
I loved this book. Sue is perhaps one of the funniest people working and I suspect it's because of the natural chaos that follows her around. This memoir is a culmination of snapshots of her life - to document everything would have taken way, way more pages - and she writes the style and command of a born writer. The way she writes and performs is something that I aspire to one day. This memoir is just wonderful and I was smiling all the way through reading it. After finishing two very heavy books, this was the perfect antidote.
