The Perfectionist's Guide to Losing Control: A Path to Peace and Power by Katherine Morgan Schafler

5.0

I don’t know why I’m sad to be finishing this but I am. I thought i still had so much more to go, and was kinda surprised when I turned the next page to see “afterword” lol. Nonetheless, I’ve been reading this on and off for 2 months so it was about time i finished this.

Sometimes, I wish my little brain could read something and retain all the information forever. I really wish it could for this book.

Every-time I picked this book back up (I’ve been in a major slump all of 2024 so far), it was talking about something I was working on myself or needed to be reminded of. It always seemed like it was catering to my needs, and I loved that.

Reading this felt so personal, and it always made me feel comforted and reassured. I learnt a lot about myself from reading this, and a lot of my behaviours changed as the weeks progressed and as I continued to read. I really recommend this to literally anybody who struggles with self compassion and anxiety/overthinking. It does focus more on perfectionism (obviously) but there are so many great tools and lessons in it that I just think make it worth the read.

Will definitely need to go through all of my highlights again soon, i have no idea what I read 2 months ago. But this was lovely, and it genuinely felt like a friend at times (didn’t know I could feel that for a nonfiction book).

Also side note, i kept joking with my therapist that she wrote this book because it genuinely was full of things she would say to me. I think that’s pretty impressive though, reading this is somewhat like free therapy
