Preaching to the Perverted by James Bennett
5.0
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
I'm going to start by saying this is the perfect book to read during spooky season. However, I feel like it's quite a bit more important than that.
On the surface, these are all great little horror stories. There's a quite a wide range of them too, everything from body horror to psychological horror is present throughout, definitely something for everyone no matter what your favourite horror tropes are.
What really stood out to me was the metaphors and the symbolism as it's all written from a queer perspective. For that reason some of the stories broke my heart as well as scared me. Some of them are uncomfortable due to the underlying themes of queer fear, exclusion and grief mixed with the beautifully written tension and foreboding within the main narrative.
I also enjoyed the way that each main character represented a different queer experience. I really feel like I connected to some more than others but that was probably part of the intention.
