OVERALL THOUGHTS: 3.5
Can I just say: that I appreciate how Adam Silvera never takes the easy road when wrapping up books, it always feels so… right. It was just what I was looking for going in and I loved it.
I was also surprised with the diversity in this book:
1. Arthur is Gay, Jewish, and has ADHD
2. Ben is Gay, Catholic and Puerto RIcan
3. Ben’s best friend, Dylan, has a heart disease and I think has anxiety? correct me if I’m wrong
I loved all of the pop culture references. The audiobook is just so FUN/FUNNY!!!!? HAHAHA
My favourite thing about the audiobook is how it’s like I’m listening to a friend telling this story about their summer. I was laughing my head off because the voice actors are amazing and the writing itself is very submersive.
And as usual, I love how there are more characters explored rather than the 2 main love interests. It made the plot easier to get into and I found myself caring about Dylan, Samantha, Ethan, Jesse, Hudson, and Hariette (?) more than I thought I would in the beginning.
Aside from being fun and relatable, the book is about being enough and right for someone. And what that really means? Whether or not the universe nudges you in the right path, you still need to consciously make a move to get you want. Which is exactly why I was in love with the first half of this story. There was a point past the middle that it lost me for a sec but it picked itself back up.
This is probably one of my favourite meet-cutes. Adam Silvera’s books can be a hit or miss for some people but the praise I think he most deserves is how “realistic” his characters and storylines seem to be. I have yet to read any other of Becky Albertalli’s books but if they are at least as good as this then I’m sure I’ll enjoy it.
It’s kinda light and kinda cheesy… but it’s the good kind of cheese. (I know I say this a lot but it's true) And would you really pass up a book that consistently brings up Evan Hansen and Hamilton references… among other things? <3
