American Love Story by Adriana Herrera

3.0

“American Love Story”, the third book in the Dreamers Series, follows Patrice and Easton. Like Nesto and Milo before him, Patrice finds himself hesitant to pursue the man he is so strongly drawn too. Patrice and Easton actually meet in the first book, but they have, at most, a fling in that book. Chronologically, Nesto’s story (book one) comes first. Milo’s story (book two) comes later, but Herrera does something with book three I found interesting. She starts this at the same time as book two. As Milo and Tom are just starting, Patrice and Easton are picking up their adventure. It’s almost the same day. This parallel timing continues, as something that happens in Milo’s story is also present in Patrice’s. I enjoy that the characters are more involved in book three than they were in book two. We’re even introduced to Priscilla who will be a big part of Juan Pablo’s story in the final book. The formula is consistent across the books, but I feel like this one carries more depth. Patrice isn’t just struggling with balancing his career with new found love, he’s trying to find a means of not sacrificing his beliefs and himself. There’s some racial injustice woven into this story adding a depth not necessarily present in the first two. I really enjoy Herrera taking that approach, even if it meant that something predictable happens toward the end of the book. I knew it was coming, but wasn’t sure how soon we’d see it. I think Patrice and Easton have my favorite ending/epilogue so far. I think it’s realistic and healthy. It’s a choice that I imagine a lot of romance authors might not make. Maybe they do. I don’t typically read romance. Either way, it felt like a nice change. This book would have benefited from better copy editing. I’m far from perfect, but the missing words, misspelled words, missing punctuation, and other things distracted me.
