Not sure what I was expecting when I picked this up, but damn did it hit hard. It was much heavier than I was anticipating considering it is YA. I enjoyed a non-white perspective of LGBT+ and it reminds me very much of my own culture and observances as a former Muslim. When Rukhsana found out something about her grandmother and mother, it reminded me of my mother telling me about something very hurtful and tragic that happened to her. I really enjoyed the character growth.
