The Nickel Boys by Colson Whitehead
5.0
A gut wrenching novel based on a real "juvenile reform school" called the Nickel Academy that operated for over 100 years in Florida and the atrocities that took place there.
The twisting, detailed plot is driven by two of the Nickel boys, Elwood and Turner. Their resilience and quest to freedom within the walls of Nickel is mirrored by the outward ongoing civil rights movements of the early 1960's.
The suppressed histories told through this book are as present as ever today. Abolish the prison industrial complex. Protect and honor Black lives.
