I had a blast while reading Bonnie Garmus's Lessons in Chemistry. It was a great story, particularly about Elizabeth Zott, a fantastic scientist and mother who unapologetically is just herself. Living in the 1950s and 1960s was a hard time for many women who were anything but housewives, and Elizabeth Zott's life was by no means easy, but she persevered and did what she could to hold on to her essential values. I enjoyed hearing her story - raising her daughter, being a chemist, and pivoting briefly to Supper at Six, a cooking show where she gladly shared how to cook good recipes using science while also sharing her thoughts and opinions, letting women know that they can take a moment to themselves and also do whatever they want, not what they are told.
Now, I will say that, honestly, sometimes, this book was hard to read. I wanted to scream at some of the behaviors and opinions of people, and it most certainly had its cringe-worthy moments. Also, I will say that I didn't enjoy about 95% of the characters, but I do think that was likely the point. The other 5% of the characters were amazing to read about, and I loved Six Thirty and Mad. Some plot twists along the way made the story even better, highlighting other vital characters and wrapping some questions you had even in the beginning with a bow.
Garmus did an incredible job making this book readable - I was utterly sucked into the story. It was such a fabulous novel and a great reminder that it's ok to be different and maybe challenge the status quo once in a while.
There is a trigger warning for rape/sexual assault, and that part was honestly hard to read. Additionally, there are many references to sexual assault and misogyny throughout. However, it truly was a fantastic book, and I am glad it's getting the hype it deserves. 4.5/5, and the only reason for not giving it five full stars was that the beginning was a little slow for me. Overall, though, I loved it!!
