The Priory of the Orange Tree by Samantha Shannon
2.0
1.5 stars

This was entirely disappointing. I tried this after also disliking The Bone Season because I'd heard that Shannon had grown in her craft. Unfortunately, I can't say that I think that's true.
This big ole book just does not earn its pages. It drops you into the world with the intention of letting it build around you, but instead, the reader flounders in what is somehow both a convoluted and underdeveloped mess. The POV shifts choke any semblance of momentum, all of the voices of the different POVs sound the same, there is at least one that felt entirely unnecessary, and by the time we get to the end and were CUT AWAY from the big showdowns, I was truly beside myself.
On top of all of that, there were some things about the brown servant/white royal romance that rubbed me the wrong way.
I think I've given Samatha Shannon enough changes. Two too many.
