No star rating on this one because I don't give ratings to journals/memoirs (even fictionalized ones).
This was an incredibly difficult story to work through, but well worth the effort. Debra Magpie Earling writes so poetically and intentionally to pull you as a reader through Sacajewea's experiences in her mind. While the book is a work of fiction, it tells the more accurate side of history and it made me want to find a nonfiction book to learn more about the real Sacajewea.
As with most books written with a focus on lyricality, poetry, etc., it can take a while to get a feel for how the language moves, but when you adjust it gets more accessible to read. That said, I do wish there had been an audiobook version that I could have listened to alongside reading as that would have been truly immersive.
Please, please, please pay very close attention to the content warnings as there are very graphic descriptions of very traumatic events that readers should be aware of.
