The Magician's Nephew by C.S. Lewis
5.0
2024: Somehow I forgot to review this/mark it as read! I finished it in March as part of my (mostly publication order) reread of the Chronicles. I had a lot of thoughts about education in Narnia and found the book very lovely but also quite creepy. Good imagery at the founding. I love books about Eden. And I see a lot of contrapasso (punishments that also fulfill what you thought you wanted) in this book, as well as the reverse of that (rewards that fulfill what you wanted in a way you never expected). And isn't that the point of Christianity, in many ways? This would also be worth comparing to TLB (the beginning vs. the end of the world) if I ever get around to this. There is neverending opportunity for scholarship and enjoyable philosophical pondering about Narnia!
2022: A daily commute to work means that I am making an effort to like audiobooks! I have never appreciated the slower pace of reading via audio, but Kenneth Branagh reading C.S. Lewis isn't half bad. I'm looking forward to rereading Narnia this summer. It's been years.
All get what they want; they do not always like it.
4.5 stars :)
