Octavia Butler's vision of the future was bleak and terrifying when this book was written in '93. It's terrifying now because the time frame is today. It begs the question, are we that far off from a similar future?

You never feel a sense of peace with the characters. They have moments, but even then, it feels as if things could turn on a dime. That is prevalent throughout the book.

Check your trigger warnings. Sexual assault is mentioned many times throughout.

This is definitely a book set in a dystopian. Things are dark, but you also hope that things work out for the characters by the end. I'll definitely pick up Parable of the Talents to see where this story goes.
