The Half of It: A Memoir by Madison Beer
4.0
I didn’t realize that I’ve been following madison since the beginning (I’ve never been a huge fan but I’ve always known about her). I remember all of these things happening to her which is crazyyyyyy. I was a vine kid so I was obsessed with her and jack gilinski lol. I also got to meet her in 2021 and she was so lovely, i didn’t expect her to be so kind.
I also didn’t expect to read her memoir right now, i didn’t even know about it till recently. But the audiobook was available on my library app so I thought it was a good time to read it.
I think people tend to often forget that celebrities are human too. I always think about the time when Cara Delevingne’s house burnt down and sooo many people were saying “don’t care, she can just build a new one.” It’s so disheartening to hear things like this. She lost her home??!! Like what???! Just because someone has money and fame, does not mean they don’t deserve empathy. They are still HUMAN. I don’t idolize celebrities anymore, for this same reason. I still appreciate what they do and I connect to it deeply, but I can’t see how putting another human being at such a high standard is healthy (at least for me).
I loved hearing about Madison’s experience with fame. Now, as she said, fame is so easily accessible and so many people don’t know the repercussions of it until they’re already in it. The thought of becoming famous sometimes keeps me from doing things that I love because I know they could lead me down that road. I don’t know how strong I would be to endure that amount of hate, and that many eyes on me. So hearing her story was really comforting, knowing that she’s doing something that she loves (with the unfortunate side effects) and after going through everything she’s gone through, she’s still okay. It’s really admirable that she’d rather stick to doing what makes her happy, instead of what makes her the most money.
Really appreciated all of the journal prompts in here, that was really sweet. I related a lot to Madison’s mindset, past and present, so it was extremely comforting to hear that she made it through. Being sensitive slays, she’s so right
anyways, fuck the patriarchy
