Ballad of Sea and Sky by Madeleine Eliot
5.0
*****SPOILER-FREE REVIEW*****
As someone obsessed with all things mermaid, I read it during a round trip flight and I loved this! It was a cute, lighthearted read that's still more adult and it definitely contained several "Romantasy" tropes that we all love. It was an easy read and as someone who has read quite a few "heavier" books this year, I was pleasantly surprised at how much I wanted to know what would happen during the story.
Marina, FMC, is a selkie princess who lives a very structured and sheltered life but has always wanted more from her life, especially as her parents control nearly every aspect of what she does, including who she is allowed to marry. Throughout the book, she's also battling a disability with her lungs, which the author did a great job highlighting and incorporating into the story. There are some moments when her disability not only affected her physically to the point where she couldn't move but also really affected her thinking and how she interacted with those around her.
Caspian, MMC, is a prisoner captured by Marina's family and as he tries to find a way to escape, he and Marina cross paths and their stories are interwoven from there. Both Marina and Caspian are from two different worlds and opposite kingdoms, whose shared history have led them to be at odds with one another and there's definitely tension between them as they confront their own misconceptions about the other and their kingdom's histories.
There are plenty of moments when I thought it would be predictable but instead, things ended up going in a different direction. The fantasy moments of mixing siren/selkie lore and traveling to distant lands gave me just enough to be satisfied with the environment/world building. I also loved that the author included song lyrics in the book.
The book does end on a cliffhanger and I definitely want to know what happens now that everything is revealed. Can't wait for book 2!
