⚠️ CW: miscarriage, paedophilia, grooming, imprisonment, drug use, abuse, murder ⚠️ If you're looking for a book that will keep you guessing until the very end and take you on the most twisted rollercoaster ride of emotions then you need to read this one! They say every house has its secrets, and the house that Maggie and Nina have shared for so long is no different. Except that these secrets are not buried in the past. Every other night, Maggie and Nina have dinner together. When they are finished Nina helps Maggie back to her room in the attic and into the heavy chain that keeps her there. Because Maggie has done things to Nina that can’t ever be forgiven, and now she is paying the price. But there are many things about the past that Nina doesn’t know and Maggie is going to keep it that way, even if it kills her. Because in this house, the truth is more dangerous than lies. This was my first John Marrs read after hearing nothing but glowing reviews about his books and now I see why. From the plot, to the writing style, to the incredible depth in his characters. Everything was perfect! I loved the dual pov between Maggie and Nina as well as the different timelines that left a breadcrumb trail throughout so you could understand the twisted and dark relationship between mother and daughter. With every twist and turn I became even more hooked and when I had to put the book down I couldn't stop thinking about what would come next. Overall, I highly recommend this book! It has easily become my favourite read of the year so far and will be hard to beat.
