I think the family aspect was the greatest thing about this book. I wanted to be in that tiny kitchen with them all so badly. I also think the exploration of grief was powerful and tenderly done. I would have loved to read more about both Mackenzie’s Mom and kokum. I felt that the climax would have carried more weight if they fought the wheetigo as a family. I also didn’t feel like that scene really matched up to the rest of the book, in terms of horror and tension, even though lives were clearly on the line. Maybe it was the pacing. Ultimately, I found the despair flowing through these pages to be reflective of my own emotional pain and I thought it was one of the saddest books I’ve read in a long time - so, obviously, I really loved it. I’m also obsessed with the cover!
