Vivid by Beverly Jenkins
4.5
CW: child death, sexism, racism
This book takes place in a Black community, Grayson Grove, in 1872 Michigan (post civil war)
Viveca aka Vivid is a physician and as a Black woman faces both sexism and misogyny as she works to take care of patients.
I love the way Beverly Jenkins weaves in American history into her books. In vivid I learned about the history of Black physicians in the US, the history of Black churches in the US, and also about the great migrations post civil war.
I will admit I wasn’t super invested in the romance. And I found Nate a tiny bit creepy how he uses the secret passageways in vivids home to just pop by (?)
