White Cat, Black Dog by Kelly Link
5.0
“And as for me, I do not know what this story is. Is it a comedy or is it a tragedy? Now that I have written it down, I still cannot see its shape.”
You know a collection of weird-ass, speculative fiction shorts hates to see me coming. I was barely halfway through the first story when I ordered my own copy, intending to return my library copy early but instead finding myself unable to put it down. Kelly Link’s “White Cat, Black Dog” is a whimsical, provoking look through a kaleidoscope pointed at a fairy tale. Not confusing, but abstract. Charmingly so, even. There are seven stories and I cannot pick a favorite, but I can promise you I’d find time to talk your ear off about every single one.
5/5 Reading this was like watching ivy spreading over a brick wall of the labyrinth you’re stuck in, getting into the divots and grooves, spelling out words you can’t understand yet.
