So this volume was actually insane!
Mutsuki’s backstory jarred me to my core, and I really hadn’t expected it. How I understand it, Mutsuki has suppressed his past from himself but faced with the torso, a man who hurt him like Mutsuki has been hurt and abused by men around him before, it all rushed to the surface again. The Torso’s death was brutal but I’m not sorry about it, though I have to admit I did feel a little sympathy for his past and it explains his actions without justifying any of them. It was also revealed that Mutsuki mutilated those cats at the academy. He doesn’t want to cause hurt, but he can’t control the urge and he hates himself for it; it’s probably a product of the abuse he has endured from his family.
Arima’s death actually broke me. “The one who sought death more than anybody was the reaper himself.” His plan all along was to aid Kaneki. The heightened senses and abilities he has because he’s half human made him into a weapon, but he never wanted to draw blood. And with his death he finally feels like he can leave something hopeful behind, instead of just destruction from all the lives he has taken and ruined. His death meant Kaneki’s survival as the new one eyed king (whatever that means), a human and a ghoul who he hopes will bring the world into order. In the end Kaneki still sees Arima as his father who kindly gifted him books, but also as a ruthless teacher who pushed him too far.
Apparantly the Washu’s have been ghouls all this time! The head of the CCG, an organization that protects humans from ghouls, are GHOULS?! So we have the corrupt CCG, the Augori who want ghouls to be superior and the V’s whose motives are pretty unclear to me… Furuta has been turned into a half-ghoul by Dr Kano using Rize’s kagune which I expected, and I have no clue about his motives but APPARENTLY he’s the clown that played a part into Kankei being turned into a ghoul.
I really enjoyed the battle scene where Ayato basically loses his shit because Hinami gets injured. He cares about her SO MUCH, and she cares for him in return and I just really loved seeing more emotions from him.
Suzuya has to be okay because he’s my favorite character and I fear I will have to stop reading If he dies.
