Escape from Asylum by Madeleine Roux

2.0

Type of read: Commuter Read.

What made me pick it up: I was looking for another series to get into and when you tell me that something is recommended for fans of Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children, you've kind of got me. Plus, I liked that I could get all the books in the series nearly all at once.

Overall rating: Here's the deal...'Escape from Asylum' is too perfect. Like, it was a good book, and it set it up VERY well for the official start of the series but you can tell, especially at the end, that it was written AFTER the original first book in the series. I did like how it was set up, how the characters were introduced, and how we got the history of Brookline (more experienced the history) but damn, it left a lot to be desired. The ending is just awkward and abrupt. It made it better that I realized the book as a whole was...for lack of a better phrase...an afterthought to complete the story. I'm still planning to move forward with the series, but I hope they have less predictable more thoughtout plots.

Reader's Note: 'Escape from Asylum' is an LGBTQ+ book with multiple characters who identify in various ways. There are also detailed explanations of medical procedures and treatments that may be upsetting to some audiences.
