Aurora Rising by Amie Kaufman, Jay Kristoff

5.0

This is another masterpiece by the amazing team, Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff. I don't know how they do it, but their writing is magical and captivating, and you are guaranteed to have your heart ripped out at one point or another while reading a book written by them. They paint amazing imagery, have incredible characters full of sass and fire, and they aren't afraid to X off those incredibly well developed characters. We need more books in the world like the ones they write. (SO PLEASE WRITE MORE TOGETHER!!)

Aurora Rising is about Squad 312 from Aurora Academy, full of misfits and rule breakers. And exactly how did Tyler Jones, aka Goldenboy get landed with this group? He was off rescuing a girl out of time when the Draft happened. Noble though his actions were, it landed him with a group that seems barely functional, let alone worthy of the effort he put into becoming the top ranked legionnaire at Aurora Academy. But the girl he rescued is more than just that. And his squad will be put into a fight way older than any of them, older than anyone could have imagined.

If you were at all a fan of the Illuminae Files, YOU NEED TO READ THIS. If you haven't read the Illuminae Files, YOU NEED TO READ THIS. The ultimate plot to the story is hidden until the very end, two of the characters have more sass in their pinky fingers than most do in their whole bodies, and hello, it's set in space! What more could you ask for?

If you're not fully convinced and going to your nearest bookstore to pick up a copy and want a few more spoilery things to convince you, keep reading.

Meet the team:
The Alpha - Tyler (aka Goldenboy)
The Ace - Cat (aka Zero)
The Face - Scarlett
The Gearhead - Fin
The Brain - Zila
The Tank - Kal
The Girl out of time - Auri

These seven embark on a journey through the Milky Way galaxy under the strange request of something inside Auri that comes out when she is asleep or unconscious. They will have to face their government, a highly respected collector, and other crazy things to figure out what exactly their mission is. The road is filled with danger, illegal actions, humorous tension breakers, and great outfits. There's a jailbreak, a heist, a secret hideout, and more than one battle. STILL not convinced you should read this? Okay, I'll give you more detailed spoilers....

Aurora is a girl out of time. She was put on a spaceship over 200 years ago that was said to have been lost forever. But it shows up in the Fold while Tyler Jones is out and about because he can't sleep. He notices that there is a signal of life on the ship and he does his civic duty and goes to investigate. When he brings her back to Aurora Academy, she wakes up in the future with no one she knows. You can imagine this would be quite the shock, and Auri has a hard time accepting what she is being told. Her ship was supposed to be heading to Octavia III not Lei Gong like everyone is trying to convince her. Something here is wrong. But when Auri is told to stow away in the Longbow ship of Squad 312, she knows that something isn't quite right. But, she does as she is told, and Squad 312 is chased by the GIA, a seemingly faceless sector of the Terran government. Without being able to control it, Auri has telekenetic powers, which help her escape the GIA and get back to Squad 312, but there is still something afoot here. She doesn't know why there is a force inside her that makes her seem and feel inhuman, or how to control it. She must put her fate in the hands of Squad 312 to help her figure out what the power inside her is trying to tell them, even if it gets them into even more trouble.

Still not convinced? Then I guess you don't like reading really amazing books with lots of action, great characters, fun atmospheres, and twists you don't really see coming. I would highly recommend this book to anyone, and it will probably become one of the books I constantly talk about when someone I know is looking for a new book to start. The characters are relative, sassy, and developed, and the story is driven forward by them. The setting is intriguing and the story itself is written beautifully. PLEASE GO READ THIS!
