Flowers in the Attic by V.C. Andrews

4.5

4.5 / 5 stars.

Oh my gosh this book was a rollercoaster. I actually cried towards the end. Seethed at the mother, and somehow felt more compassion but still bridled discernment for the grandmother. The Dollaganger children were reduced to animals, “flowers in an attic”, and V.C Andrews does a phenomenal job of making you think of the right questions. Is love —any love—more powerful than money? Is sin really sin, or just a byproduct of unmeditated circumstance? The writing did give me some irks (how one person can be speaking in one long breath for five pages, but that’s neither here nor there) but at the same time it was marvelous.
Also please don’t only read it if you’re guiltily lusting for some sibling incest. This is more a story of pain and mental/spiritual growth than cheap erotica. Treasure the story as it should be: a classic Gothic family saga
