Contemporary Classics: The best Australian short fiction 1965-1995 by Don Anderson
5.0
This would have to be the best find I've ever had from a second hand book fair! Some of the most brilliant Australian authors of the last century are included here, (you just have to look at the prize-littered mini-biographies at the end to see this is a VERY illustrious crowd). As with all compilations, I found this a little hit-and-miss, but with so many more hits, and the misses are probably more to do with me being unfamiliar (and therefore less comfortable) with some more experimental writing styles. I am considerably more willing to give some of the weirder styles a go given the short story format, you know if you don't like it, it won't drag on for too long! (Unlike some other books I've given up on recently...) Consider it to be a literary degustation, a beautiful introduction to whet the appetite for more Australian writing. I am very inspired! It's too hard to even pick a favourite!
