How to Be an Antiracist by Ibram X. Kendi

challenging informative reflective medium-paced

4.5

I really appreciated Kendi taking us through his experience as a Black person unlearning his own beliefs about racism, and redefining what racism means. It was reaffirming and empowering to hear the creator of antiracism explain, in his own terms, what antiracism means.

The memoir-esque style of this kept it interesting and easy to get back into, and helped make sense of a lot of the more abstract theories he presented. Kendi painted a detailed picture of his life experiences and connected them to his thoughts and beliefs as they evolved over time, which really helped me connect with his beliefs myself.

I especially appreciated his inclusion of intersectional feminism, and recognizing that Black women and Black LGBTQIA+ people experience racism in a different, if not worse, way. I admire Kendi's ability to not only admit that he was wrong in the past, but that he continues to strive to learn and grow even more (as shown by his edits and footnotes in the version I listened to).

I feel extremely grateful and lucky that I get to live in the same time as Ibram X. Kendi and other great scholars who share their passions and knowledge with us.
