Rebel of the Sands by Alwyn Hamilton
1.0
Read as part of my project reading 10 years of Goodreads Choice Award Winners.
This had me interested for approximately 5 seconds. The beginning was compelling as we met our main character and understood her circumstances. From there, we time jump really quickly, and the most compelling part of the story, the building of the relationship between the FMC and the MMC, happens off-screen. The pacing is so uneven and there are portions of this that are complete slogs. Then we would fast-forward again and land in these whiplash action sequences that felt like they had no grounding.
The writing became pretty repetitive to me as well, particularly in some of the language, the "witty" banter, the nicknames, and the like. This repetition stood in place of characterization and relationship building. And with that, and the predictable plot, this was at best, rather generic.
Unfortunately, the worst part of this is that the representation is shallow and relies heavily on stereotypes. It made me physically uncomfortable to read.
