Damn. What a heartbreaking book. I usually read a book like this in winter to reflect the bleakness and darkness of winter. And maybe I’d give it 5 stars if this was when I read it. But reviews were surging this summer and my public library had a copy at the ready. I jumped right in. I don’t want to offer any spoilers but there is plenty of suffering and loss for our hero. He doesn’t do himself many favors but a few people stand up to help him amid the challenges. Sometimes that’s what it takes.
