This is a short story set in the world of the Green Bone Saga Trilogy, just before the events of the first book Jade City. Now whilst this book does not contain any spoilers for the series nor does it follow any of the characters (although there are some cameos) I would heavily suggest you read the trilogy (or at least the first book) before reading this.

As I’m sure other die-hard fans of the series would agree, reading the first book would give you an advantage in understanding the world and the magic system relating to Jade. There is very little explanation about the Jade disciplines in the story, which may confuse some readers if you decide to read this first.

Our story follows Pulo, a Jade setting apprentice to a renowned master. They are tasked with working on the most valuable possession belonging to an important and dangerous figurehead in Janloon. Unfortunately it goes missing, setting off a chain of events which will alter Pulo’s life as well as his colleagues. Pulo has three days to find and return the missing item unless he wants to face the consequences.

At just 144 pages this story will fully immerse you into the world and the characters. I loved every single second of being back in Janloon (I can honestly say The Green Bone Saga is my favourite series of all time, so I am very biased!). Seeing the world from a different perspective was brilliant, and we got to explore aspects that were only briefly touched upon in the main series.

I got so emotional seeing some of my favourite characters again, I’m so happy that Lee included a part with Hilo & the Maik brothers.

Overall 5 stars and I have everything crossed that Lee will publish other short stories set in this world over time.
