The Silence of the Girls by Pat Barker

5.0

Second time reading:

Perhaps even more phenomenal the second time around, after having read a number of other retellings that always seem to fall short for me. Can't wait to discuss this one with my book club! Briseis offers such an interesting and devastating part of the Iliad's famous story. It's also exciting to see how the story is tweaked by Barker, both regarding events and its well-known characters. I reread this in full for my master's work, but I imagine I'll be rereading parts of it for the next months to come as well. It gets a full five stars this time around!

First time reading:

Rating: 4,5 stars.

This was phenomenal. Dark and gritty and horrible, but at the same time powerful. Having read The Iliad first, then The Song of Achilles, I had a deep want in me for Briseis' story and point of view. The Silence of the Girls did not dissappoint. What a wonderful story about love, grief, war, and the erasure of women's voices.

Look up the trigger warnings for this one, it is definitely intended for an adult audience.
