Long Live Evil by Sarah Rees Brennan
- Plot- or character-driven? A mix
- Loveable characters? No
1.0
Right from the start I felt like this book was trying so hard to be edgy and cool that it just felt cringy and unfortunately it never got better. This is so bad. It feels like a book built on tropes and archetypes instead of actual characters and plots. The different POVs were not very interesting and I think it would’ve been better if it was just one or maybe two POVs. This was just messy.
And I just cannot deal with so many pop culture references in a fantasy book. I know the main character was from the real world (so to speak) but having to read the phrase “poor little meow-meow” sent me over the fucking edge. And that’s not all! Here are some of the quotes I marked:
- Seriously, you will be powerful A.F.
- Spill the tea
- Sorry, but the old Rahela can’t come to the phone right now.
- Your poor little meow-meow
And unfortunately there were many more quotes like this. It already felt outdated and unfunny now when the book is new and I doubt this will hold up well as the book gets older.
