The White Album by Joan Didion

5.0

Masterclass in writing, though my overall thoughts on the content are more complicated, ranging from laudatory to ecstatic to... puzzled? Frustrated? Though, after reading the book, I don't think Joan Didion would want it any other way; she seems like the type of person to prioritize generative engagement over sentiment, even if that sentiment would otherwise be laudatory and ecstatic. Not all the perspectives she expresses would be all that well-received today ("The Women's Movement," "In the Islands," "In Bogota"), but in any case they flesh out the imperfect character that is Her. In any case, the collection reads like a crystalline snapshot of the American cultural zeitgeist, even 40 or so years later. Very relatable and surprisingly "romantic" (her words, not mine--again, see "In the Islands") even when her prose seems detached.
