The Rest of Us Just Live Here by Patrick Ness
5.0
This book is so lovely. For several reasons. It's funny and it's relatable and it's interesting, while at the same time it's just... normal. The main characters aren't really the "heroes" of a story, that's in the background of this novel, but that's part of the beauty of it I think. They're just normal teenagers. Well, almost.
Normally I think I would have thought of this kind of story as mediocre, but when you add a little Patrick Ness magic it turns out wonderful. There's so much more to it than just teens having romantic struggles before graduating high school. Like for example, this one group of friends has more representation alone than most YA books do as a whole. POC? Check. LGBT? Check. Mentally ill people? Check.
Speaking of mental illnesses; that conversation between Mikey and his therapist was so amazing. I want to buy this book just so I can highlight everything that was said and go back and read it a hundred times more.
I don't know if this counts as a proper review but I don't care I just love this book a lot and needed to point out a few things. Anyway. Patrick Ness is a gem.

I'm happy. Which is the weirdest thing of all.
