Harleen by Stjepan Šejić
5.0
This book contains an origin story for Harley Quinn, Joker's lover and partner in crime - the oversexualized insane woman that made every woman dress as her for Halloween four years ago. But what Sejic's version does is actually offer an intelligent woman and a masterful seducer.
For the entire book I wanted what I knew it cannot happen - I wanted Harleen to turn out ok. To escape the manipulator's scheme, to see what we all know is inevitable - her transformation towards Harley Quinn. I think this is the art of the story - while still knowing the ending, to keep you on your feet, hoping that the inevitable is avoidable.
It is not. But the turns, the winding road, is what keeps you with the story. And Harleen does that, by building a believable character who fails miserably. What shook me was the realism in her demise - the transformation from the good woman trying to do the right thing, to the toy of a maniac. Her gradual corruption excellently followed, believable at every step.
It's not just that that makes this book amazing. It's also the way the universe revolves around her. The retelling of the Harvey Dent story, the presence of Batman, the organic transformation of Harleen to Harley makes sense - it contains all the stress, all the mayhem needed for people to just explode, all properly paced.
The writing is awesome, as well as the drawing. Perhaps the one thing that I disliked is making a likeable, good looking Joker - but it's not for our sakes, but for the character. To make her attraction more believable.
