A Lonely Harvest by Aniruddhan Vasudevan, Perumal Murugan

3.0

Read this after one part woman. The author had written two different ways on how the story flows after one part woman. This book is one of it. It is not necessary to read one part woman to understand this book.

Here, spoiler alert: the main character, Kali, was successful in his suicide. The author had craftily depicted widowhood and pregnancy.

However, I didn’t really like the way this ending goes. I preferred trial by silence.

The author shows Ponna as an obedient wife. She goes on to build a temple for him and worships him despite all their shortcomings. At some point author shows that Ponna with her mother in law and mother; as an independent team. Sort of like women empowerment. On the other hand, she fits the narrative of an obedient wife; worshipping her husband and confining her movements within her house (due to her widowhood). Errr it’s a tricky read for me.

Overall an okay read for me. Happy reading.
