Dear Mrs Bird by A.J. Pearce

4.0

Rounded down from 4.5 stars ⭐️

Dear Mrs Bird follows Emmy, a young woman who aspires to be a war reporter. Unfortunately, when a job at a local news company opens up, the requirements and the boss aren’t what she expected. She is tasked with opening letters from readers asking for advice, many of which her boss refuses to answer. Eventually, Emmy starts answering some of them herself.

I’m not even sure where to begin reviewing this wonderful book. It’s both light-hearted and heart-breaking combined into one novel. At times I found myself on the brink of tears, other times I’d be smiling and laughing. My emotions were so conflicting but it made this all the more enjoyable to read.

I loved the characters, they were so vividly written, I feel like they are my dear friends. I also loved the relationships between them (both good and bad). AJ Pearce’s writing transported me back in time, to a life so different, yet so similar to current times. This is one of the best debut novels I’ve ever read. I can’t wait to read the next book in the series.

I would recommend this to anyone that likes easy to read, historical fiction. Although you may need some tissues next to you, just in case!
