Nigerians in Space by Deji Bryce Olukotun
3.0
3.5 for good writing and Southern African culture I got lost in (made me reminisce on my time there).
This book is NOT science fiction!! This is my fault because I should have checked the genre it was in before I checked it out, but, in my defense…it literally has “space” in the title!!
Spoiler Alert: Absolutely ZERO Nigerians go to space in this story!! I know—I was confused too!! I kept holding out after all the murder and introductions of various new characters, thinking, but surely the space part is coming soon. It never came. This book would best be described as contemporary African fiction, with murder and spy themes in France and South Africa, mostly.
If you aren’t knowledgeable on Southern African culture, I suggest reading the author’s notes in the back first.
So confused still and like why did that one girl just glow. I thought it was some radiation tag that the spy ring put in her but no?? And then she disappears and no one knows what happened or cares?? Who was the dead girl in Bullo’s house in Cape Town, and why was she dead. Why did the Ibeji use Ibeji statues as their signature?? Like???? Soo many unanswered questions. The biggest being why did I think this was sci-fi
