It pains me having to rate this 3-stars, but let me explain why I have to.
First of all, the story is great, entertaining, and funny, with a great cast of, rather quirky, characters. It's easy to read and quite captivating. I loved and thoroughly enjoyed it. 4 stars for the narrative.
But?
Well, first of all there is the issue with editing. There are quite a number of typos and missing words. There is also the issue with a rather unusual choice in formatting - a whole book with dialogue written in Italics. A rather odd decision.
Secondly, I cannot get over the fact that Mars is, according to this book, a hot planet. No, it is not. Now one might argue: 'Well, but compared to Jupiter it is.' Yeah, but humans experience temperature in relation to their body temperature unless a change in outside temperature is sudden (like coming into a warm room when it's freezing outside), and there is no teleportation or anything the like happening here. So no, Mars is - neither in fact nor circumstantially - not a 'hot planet'.
Given the fact that this is a book aimed at Middle Grade/Young Adults I cannot, with good conscience, let those mistakes slip unnoticed and unaccounted for.
Story: 4 stars
Editing: 2 stars
Fact check: 2 stars
So, it's de facto a 2.6 rating rounded up to 2.75
Please, Nathan, put this book into revision, it deserves a better rating, but I really cannot do this at its current state. I am so very sorry.
Despite those facts, it's been a great story and an enjoyable read.
