The Birth House by Ami McKay

I absolutely love this style of storytelling: diary entries, letters, and a biography of life narrated by the person living it. Or as the author puts it, “a literary scrapbook.” I was drawn into the story, the moments of joy and sorrow, and the spunk and sheer drive of characters whose days were spent in the beautiful country of Nova Scotia.
Some may deem this story somewhat ‘controversial’ but I would have to disagree. This is a story about a midwife at a time when modern medicine was beginning to usher itself into the smaller societies where the people did things ‘the way they always have’ and change was not easily welcomed. It’s supposed to have a sort of bias towards the more traditional methods of healing, and the healers whose hands were well trained in the ways passed down to them. Because it is written from the perspective of one of those healers.
Excellent story and beautifully written!
