I liked the storyline overall, and it definitely made me a Shakespeare was a woman truther, but aspects of Melina's story got on my nerves. I know Melina's inability to recognize how her treatment of Andre comes across as insensitive and privileged is the point of that part of the plot, but it didn't make it any less annoying to me. Every time she went on about how women are treated in theater and Andre had to point out he was a gay, Black man and was also marginalized, doubly so, I wanted to shake her. I also found the idea of pretending to be a man in this prolonged scheme, when the entire point of her play was about how a woman's voice was was erased from history, just nonsensical??? Did she black out when she was writing it?? It didn't seem to align with everything she claimed to care about. How can you be so passionate about giving a voice to your ancestor, but perfectly okay with repeating history by not taking credit for your work? Melina's story just had a lot of plot points that I found to be messy and frustrating, but I very much enjoyed Emilia's portions of the story and the way it weaved together the different theories around Shakespeare.
