I enjoyed this book and plan to continue the series, but I didn't love it the way I was absolutely captivated by Amina al-Sirafi. I found the romance subplots to be really tiresome and took away from my enjoyment of the story and I had trouble keeping track of the tribes of djinn (this is probably an artifact of having listened to it instead of eye reading it). One of my pet peeves is a book that drops a ton of cliff hanger intrigue into an epilogue, so I wasn't really a fan of that. Things I liked about this book: the world building was rich and beautifully done, and the characters were complicated and no one was a clear-cut baddie or hero. I will probably take a break before reading book two, but it won't be too long because I don't want to lose context before I dive in.
