Although book 2 is a continuation of the same story from book one, it distinguishes itself by veering into a new genre: the post-apocalyptic survival story. This time around, the narrative is more focused, following two main characters (one, a minor character from the previous book) who find themselves in destinations that they will stay in as they prepare to face what may possibly be the worst, and longest lasting, fifth season in history. This narrative choice adds depth to the world Jemison has created, answering many questions raised during the first book. There is a thematic shift where trust leads to the idea of family and morality. Sometimes when the characters are using their orogeny, it can be hard for me to fully picture what exactly is happening, but it is not so confusing as to not be able to follow the story. I enjoyed this even more than “The Fifth Season” (which I loved) and am bracing myself for the big finale.
