I finally wrapped up The Giver series that I started, like may of us, in middle school. It feels so good to see how Gabe and Jonas ended up. The Son is split into 3 parts and mainly tells the story of Claire, Gabe’s birth mother. Pain through loss and longing of maternal love is the main theme of this book.

I was really invested in the first part of the book because we were back in the original Giver community learning how Gabe’s mother longed for him and needed to secretly go against the governing system to connect with her son. However, I was confused by how Claire ended up in the other community and felt that part of her story dragged a bit (I believe it was the community from The Messenger).

Conversely, I wish there was more detail and character building in the third part. We finally get a wrap on how Gabe and Jonas are doing, but I wish there was more story behind their growth and relationship with each other in this new community. The fight with the trade master also seemed to be a weird addition to the storyline to focus on, but I am happy with the ending.
