Cutting for Stone by Abraham Verghese
4.0
This book is a lot of things and I find it hard to write a review. It's an inter-generational story. It's a story about an Indian family, living in Ethiopia, so the main character is a third culture kid. It's setting in Ethiopia gives it a bit of the feel of a historical novel, but the historic aspects are more part of the setting of the story than the focal point. The novel is largely set in a medical setting and goes into depth about a number of medical situations. It's a story about family dynamics, love, betrayal, hate, and forgiveness.
My two hesitations in recommending the book are the sex scenes. We could have known what was happening without details. And then there's the length of the book. It's pretty daunting at 534 pages.
