The Only Good Indians by Stephen Graham Jones
3.5
A group of friends pursue a herd of elk into the elder's section of the reservation. Opening fire on the herd, the friends rush to clean their kills. Except one of the elk isn't dead. And she's pregnant. Surely it's a coincidence when, years later, the friends start to see glimpses of the elk....right?
The Only Good Indians is a tale of revenge. You decide is the means are justified.
There is a lot contextually I just did not understand about The Only Good Indians. I don't hunt. In fact, I don't know anything about hunting. I knew nothing about the abject horror of shooting a female (elk) while hunting until speaking with a friend. Luckily, none of this affected my enjoyment of the book, although it did alter my understanding.
The Only Good Indians, at times, feels like a concept album. The themes are prevalent and reoccur throughout the novel, despite changes in scenery and perspective. The tone lulls you into a false sense of security, until suddenly you are shocked at what you have just read.
The horror elements are legitimate, and will satisfy most horror fanatics of all genres; creature features, psychological thrillers, hack and slash, and spiritual/supernatural terror. As with most horror books - check your content warnings first if you are sensitive.
