This book was a welcome respite from all the romantasy I've read. It's a great whimsical, typically D&D adventure. Full of unexpected developments.
And I would have loved to totally adore this story, but for one important thing: the characters. They did not come to life for me. Did not have their own identity. I really had a hard time remembering some of them, even though I read about them a couple of pages back. They did not feel fleshed out to me, but more as each had their purpose like NPC characters and acted based on predetermine rules they were given. Which was a disappointment, cause this could have been one amazing found family adventure...
I also miss some kind of closure as this is a stand alone. Likewhat is going on with Pie's family? Or the countess story? Would have loved to know what had happened to her... But alas, that is life...
