The Incredible Women of the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League by Anika Orrock
4.0
If you want an accessible, high-level overview of the history of the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League, Anika Orrock's book is a good place to start. Orrock runs through the origins of the league, major league events like their trip to play in Cuba, the expectations that the players faced in terms of "feminine" appearance and behavior, and how things eventually wound down after WWII. The narrative is interspersed with cute, retro cartoons by Orrock, as well as copious quotations from the league owners, media, and most importantly, the players themselves. Near the end of the book Orrock touches on the exclusion of Black women in the league, but doesn't acknowledge the queer history of the AAGPB, which was already documented at the point this book came out.
