The novella form is so tricky! Just because it’s a shorter form than a novel doesn’t mean it’s easier to pull off. Tierney manages to introduce a mostly unique cast of characters and touch on several themes that our main character was grappling with, while maybe not fully resolving them or giving them the page time that was warranted. I was a little underwhelmed with the formatting of the book’s margins and there were a couple of glaring typos that left me wondering about the editing process of this book.
I kinda didn’t feel super on-board with the characterization of the abusive mom character. I think that some brief background on MC’s mom would have gone a long way. Or alternating perspective chapters!
The novella was short enough that it could have been bolstered with some shorter stories by Tierney to make it a longer overall read and offer some more insight into Tierney’s writing voice!
