I’ve never read anything like this before and it was thrillingly gorgeous. Freshwater is narrated not by Ada - the girl whose coming-of-age story is at the center of this novel - but from the perspective of multiple deities and cosmic forces that inhabit her. Akwaeke Emezi’s autobiographical fiction novel is rooted in the Nigeria culture and their beliefs about multiple selves and how they come to be (ogbanje). This explores multiple personalities, identity, religion, spirituality, and mental health. (Check TWs before picking this up).
